For the first time ever Russia will host an exhibition of contemporary African art featuring works of over 40 Tingatinga artists.
Since 1970s Tingatinga art has been on display in the biggest galleries and museums in the world. France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, USA, Denmark, Norway, Japan Ц and now Russia Ц have discovered for themselves this beautiful, authentic, colourful and unexpected art. The Moscow exhibition will present over 70 works including those from private collections.
Tingatinga art originated in 1960s in Tanzania and was named after the founder of this school Ц Eduardo Saidi Tinga-Tinga. He was born in 1932 (or 1937, according to some sources) in the Makonde tribe in the south of Tanzania. Starting with 1960s, after moving to Dar-es-Salaam, he began painting actively. Having no academic education, he drew with enamel automobile paint on anything that he set his eyes on. The Africa living in his heart Ц the sun, marvels of nature, animals, birds, legends and myths, rhythms, dances and sacral rituals Ц went on to live in his paintings.
The exhibition will present all major styles Ц images of birds and animals classical for the Tingatinga school, complex multi-figure compositions with scenes from everyday life resembling comic strips, stories from the traditional mythology, Biblical motives. The Tingatinga school is a bright example of contemporary art going back to the roots and at the same time utterly innovative.December, 18, 18.00
